TIME TO ORDER PHEASANT CHICKs

The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is once again distributing day-old pheasant chicks for rearing and release projects to  4-H youth.   Why should one get involved with pheasants?  It is a fun learning experience for all that are involved. Releasing the pheasants in the fall is an awarding experience. And lastly, they are beautiful to observe and listen to.

If you are interested, please call Linda Brosch at 963-7286, ext 400 for more information.  The deadline for ordering the chicks is March 9, 2012.  No late orders; the DEC has strict hatching schedules to adhere to.  A person can order a small number of chicks or they can order 500. The decision is yours to make. Just remember, the more chicks you order the larger rearing pen you need.

Sewing Classes for Youth

Do you have an interest in learning how to sew, but didn’t have any idea where to start?  Well, Oswego County 4-H is offering a series of classes that is perfect for you.  Learn to Sew, a series of four sewing lessons, will teach children ages 8-19 how to sew with a sewing machine and by hand.  This class is also a great refresher for those who would like to brush up on their sewing skills.

The classes will be held from 6:30 pm until 8:00 pm on the following Monday’s:  February 13, February 27, March 19 and March 26 at the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oswego County office  in Mexico.

Learn to Sew is open to any youth 8 years of age or older. The 4-H Program will supply sewing machines; however, if you wish to bring your own, you can.  There is a $30.00 fee for this series of sewing classes. The 4-H Office will supply all the materials needed.  Program participants just need to bring their enthusiasm, and an adult chaperone.

To register for this class please call the 4-H Office at 963-7286, ext 401 or email Mary Matteson at mmm65@cornell.edu by Wednesday, February 1.
